This proportion is higher than usual and represents a 53% increase compared to July 2025. Since Mayor Zohran Mamdani took office at the start of the year, overall hate crimes have risen by 9.4% compared to the same period last year, from 329 to 360. Confirmed anti-Jewish hate crimes have increased by 8.5% this year, with 205 so far this year compared to 189 over the same period last year. Jews have been targeted in 57% of all hate crimes in the city so far this year, despite making up only about 10% of the city's population. Hate crimes against other groups have shown mixed trends: incidents against Asians, Black people, and White people are down, while incidents against Hispanic people, Muslims, and crimes motivated by sexual orientation and gender have increased. Mayor Mamdani stated that the work to uproot antisemitism will continue until hate crimes end. City Council Speaker Julie Menin, who is Jewish, expressed deep concern about the unacceptable spike in hate crimes, particularly those targeting Jewish New Yorkers.
