Janitor beaten for being Arab shot dead in Jerusalem

Khalil al-Rashak, a Palestinian janitor previously beaten for his Arab ethnicity, was shot at the Shuafat checkpoint in Jerusalem. His family claims he did not hear warnings and bled for 15 minutes without help. Police say he disobeyed orders and was wounded in the leg.

Khalil al-Rashak, a 40-year-old father of five who worked as a janitor in Jerusalem, was shot dead at the Shuafat checkpoint. Six months earlier, he was brutally attacked by two young men solely because of his Arab ethnicity; the assailants were convicted. His family claims that on the day of his death, al-Rashak lost his ID, returned for it, and at the checkpoint did not hear warnings, was shot five times, and bled for 15 minutes without assistance. Police say he crossed a vehicle lane, disobeyed orders, was wounded in the leg by two shots, and was taken to hospital. The circumstances are under investigation.
