Italian leader nominates Gaza children for Nobel Peace Prize

Andrea Orlando, former Italian labor minister and a leader of the opposition Democratic Party, has voiced support for the initiative to nominate the children of the Gaza Strip for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, which was launched by the newspaper Avvenire, affiliated with the Italian Bishops' Conference. In a press statement, Orlando said he supports 'with firm conviction' the appeal published by the newspaper to nominate the children, girls, and boys of Gaza for the prize. He added that children's lives are still being lost due to the 'atrocities' of Israeli occupation Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his occupation government, along with hunger, lack of medicine, and basic needs. The Italian official criticized the international community's failure to stop the war in the Gaza Strip, considering that the international community 'bears responsibility' for it amid the continued suffering of civilians. Orlando's remarks come at a time when political, academic, and popular initiatives are escalating in Italy to show solidarity with Gaza's children, amid growing calls to pressure for stopping the war and providing humanitarian aid to the Strip.
