The researchers used advanced computer simulations lasting over 28 microseconds and examined four common types of plastic: polyethylene (plastic bags), polypropylene (food containers), polystyrene (styrofoam and disposable utensils), and polyethylene terephthalate (drink bottles). The results showed that three of the materials are naturally attracted to the brain barrier due to their chemical structure, while polyethylene terephthalate was found to be less adapted. The plastics reach the brain as tiny clumps, dissolve completely within the protective layer, and exit on the other side as broken-down material chains. The researchers noted that more 'flexible' plastic excels in the dissolution process. The findings open hope for developing drugs to block the phenomenon.
