Greece is tightening measures against the smuggling of khat, a substance whose trade is illegal in several European countries. According to sources, Israelis are detained immediately upon arrival and placed in prolonged custody. Laboratory tests can take about four months, during which detainees remain without formal charges. Attorney Mordechai Tzin, an international law specialist, emphasized that Greece implements one of the strictest enforcement models in the EU for such cases. It is noted that people of various ages, including members of the ultra-Orthodox sector, are involved in the schemes as couriers. A month ago, two Israeli women were detained in Poland with 100 kg of khat.
