To date, Rafael has delivered only one system, Or Eitan, to the army. Its delivery was accompanied by statements about a serious technological breakthrough that should complement Israel's existing multi-layered air defense system and significantly reduce the cost of intercepting aerial targets. However, during recent fighting in Lebanon, the laser system was not used, despite rocket attacks and drone use by Hezbollah. Rafael explained that the system has not yet completed all necessary stages of preparation for full operation. A defense industry representative estimated the time to full operational maturity at about three to four years. Meanwhile, production of new systems continues, and additional units are planned to be delivered to the IDF by the end of 2026. Their exact number is not disclosed. The main advantage of 'Iron Beam' is supposed to be the cost of direct interception. Unlike expensive interceptor missiles, a powerful laser strikes the target using a directed energy beam, so the cost per shot could potentially be significantly lower. The system is designed to counter rockets, drones, and other aerial threats at a range of about 10 kilometers. Rafael and the Ministry of Defense have previously reported successful tests of the technology in various scenarios. However, the low cost of the laser shot itself does not mean the entire system is cheap. Each system capable of generating a sufficiently powerful beam is estimated to cost tens of millions of dollars. Due to the limited range, a large number of such units would be required for full territorial defense. Former IDF air defense commander Ran Kochav called for caution regarding claims of nearly free intercepts. According to him, when assessing the real cost, one must account for research, development, testing, infrastructure, and serial production expenses. Over the past decade, hundreds of millions of dollars have been invested in laser weapon development, and significant investments will be needed in the future. Therefore, the economic benefit of the new technology will only become noticeable after its large-scale deployment and a large number of intercepts. An additional problem is the need to cover a significant area. With a range of about ten kilometers, one or several units are insufficient, and creating a dense network of laser systems will require significant costs and time. In parallel, the defense establishment is seeking new ways to counter drones. Of particular concern are drones controlled via fiber-optic cable, as traditional electronic warfare measures are ineffective against them. The Ministry of Defense has already held a special discussion on possible solutions to this problem. Among the technologies under consideration are electro-optical detection systems, interceptor drones, and systems capable of downing drones using special nets.
