Iranian hackers could leave Israel without water: authorities strengthen protection

Israel has increased its readiness for potential Iranian cyberattacks on water supply systems. The National Cyber Security Directorate warned of risks after a large-scale attack on US water infrastructure and said it is closely analyzing the situation with American partners. According to the agency, Israeli water facilities have repeatedly been targeted by Iranian hacker groups. In recent years, numerous attempts to penetrate digital systems controlling pumping stations, water treatment plants, and other critical infrastructure have been recorded. Most attacks were prevented thanks to the joint work of cybersecurity specialists, government agencies, and infrastructure operators. The directorate is now conducting additional security checks on water sector facilities, assessing readiness for possible new attacks, and strengthening protective mechanisms. Experts warn that a successful cyberattack could lead to interruptions in drinking water supply, disruption of pumping stations and treatment facilities, failures in distribution network management, and temporary shutdown of individual infrastructure facilities. Additionally, such attacks could cause disruptions in hospitals, industrial enterprises, and other vital facilities. The directorate emphasized that Israel views the protection of critical infrastructure as a key element of national security. The agency continues to exchange information with international partners, study new cyberattack methods, and implement additional protective measures.
