Iran escalates drone attacks targeting Kurdish opposition groups in northern Iraq

Iran escalated its drone attacks on the Kurdistan Region of Iraq early Tuesday morning, targeting Kurdish Iranian opposition groups. The attacks have become increasingly deadly, with around nine people killed in July. Drones struck bases belonging to Komala and other groups east of Erbil, while another drone was shot down. Komala reported that its bases have been targeted by more than 95 missiles and drones since the start of the war. The Kurdistan Democratic Party of Iran (KDPI) reported two drones crashing inside Jezhnikan camp, which houses families of members. Attacks were also launched from near Mosul by Iranian-backed militias, according to Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani. The militias operate under Iran's IRGC. Iraq's Prime Minister Ali al Zaidi has vowed to rein in the militias, but the attacks indicate limited success. The strikes come amid heightened regional tensions following renewed US-Iran military strikes.
