Iran asked Russia for new attack drones: the danger for Israel

According to the Financial Times, Iran has asked Russia to sell it modern Geran attack drones for use in the war against Israel and the US. The new Russian Geran-4 and Geran-5 UAVs are equipped with jet engines, reach speeds of up to 600 km/h, and carry a warhead of up to 90 kg. When launched from Lebanon, Syria, or Iraq, such drones could reach Israeli territory.

Iran has asked Russia to sell it modern Geran attack drones for use in the war against Israel and the US. This was reported on September 14 by Ynet, citing an article in the Financial Times. Western intelligence officials and a source close to the Kremlin told the FT that in 2026 Tehran asked Moscow to sell it Geran drones — an improved version of the Iranian Shahed. The new Russian Geran-4 and Geran-5 UAVs are equipped with jet engines and reach speeds of up to 600 km/h. The Geran-5 carries a warhead weighing 90 kg and can strike targets at a range of up to 1000 km. With that stated range, such a drone cannot reach Israel when launched from Iran, but theoretically could reach Israeli territory when launched from Lebanon, Syria, and a significant part of Iraq. Iran may also try to upgrade the UAV by reducing the warhead weight to increase flight range.
