Iran and Qatar Exchange Accusations: 'Holding Three Pilots Captive'

According to the Missing Persons Committee of the General Staff of Iran's Armed Forces, the three pilots' planes were shot down over Qatar on March 2 while en route to strike the US Al Udeid base, which houses the forward headquarters of US CENTCOM. Qatar denies the claims. A Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesman stated on X that the three pilots' planes were indeed shot down, and that Qatari search and rescue teams found the remains of one of them. He said Iran was invited in April to visit and receive a briefing on these efforts but did not respond to the invitation. Until now, Tehran said it had no information on the fate of the three pilots. This is the first known case since the start of Operation 'Roar of the Lion' in which Iran claims a regional state is holding its fighters. Qatar reported on March 2 that its air force shot down two Iranian Su-24 bombers while Iran attacked countries hosting US military bases in the early days of the fighting. In an Iranian statement yesterday (Saturday), it was claimed that Qatar did not allow the pilots to meet or communicate with their families or with Iranian officials handling their cases. Iran asked the president of the International Red Cross for help. The letter stated that a fourth pilot was killed while on a mission 'whose target was a military base of the enemy in Qatar'.
