Iran's Oil Minister, Mohsen Paknejad, announced the discovery of a large gas field in southern Fars province, estimated to contain 212.4 billion cubic meters of natural gas. According to him, considering an estimated recovery rate of 72-73 percent, about 161.4 billion cubic meters of gas could be extracted from the field, an amount equivalent to the production of one phase of the South Pars project over about 15 years. The announcement comes amid significant difficulties in Iran's energy sector. In recent months, Tehran has reported damage to gas production and processing infrastructure during the war with Israel and the United States. Paknejad stated earlier this month that Iran is working to restore by the end of September a production capacity of about 95 million cubic meters of gas per day lost due to damage to facilities in the Asaluyeh area. Although Iran holds one of the largest gas reserves in the world, it faces seasonal gas and electricity shortages due to international sanctions, lack of investment and technology, aging infrastructure, and rising domestic consumption. Paknejad presented the discovery as a strategic asset that could help narrow the gap between domestic demand and production capacity, but the Oil Ministry did not provide a timeline for developing the field or for commercial production from it.
