A smuggler's boat carrying more than 60 migrants from Africa docked last Wednesday at Cala del Barco beach, near the La Manga resort in the Murcia region of southern Spain. The incident occurred in broad daylight, in front of a stunned crowd of bathers and tourists. The boat operators turned around and sailed back to the open sea immediately after the migrants disembarked. Francisco Bernabé, a local conservative politician, attacked in a tweet on X the failure to detect the boat on radar, asking whether the radars are turned off or deliberately ignored. Fernando López Miras, the president of the Murcia region, accused the government of negligence and incompetence in safeguarding the security of Spaniards. The Spanish Civil Guard arrested 45 men, two women, and 15 minors, and they were transferred to the national police, which handles immigration matters.
