Immediately After Landing: Pilot Caught with 70,000 Ecstasy Pills in Suitcase

A 39-year-old Malaysian pilot from Malaysia Airlines was arrested at Soekarno-Hatta Airport in Jakarta after more than 70,000 ecstasy pills and four grams of methamphetamine were found in his suitcase. He had landed a passenger flight from Kuala Lumpur, and a blood test revealed cocaine, MDMA, and methamphetamine. He admitted to being a courier for an international syndicate in exchange for about $12,240. Indonesia has strict drug laws, and the penalty could be death.

He was surprised by the inspection, as he believed that as a crew member he would pass through the fast track without rigorous screening. Malaysia Airlines announced that it is fully cooperating with authorities and has launched an internal investigation, emphasizing a zero-tolerance policy for disciplinary offenses. Indonesia has some of the world's strictest drug laws, and the offenses attributed to the pilot carry penalties of life imprisonment or even death by firing squad. Although a de facto moratorium on executions has been in place in recent years, about 90 foreign nationals convicted of drug offenses are currently on death row in the country's prisons.
