A giant iceberg about 14 kilometers long ran aground 3–5 kilometers from emperor penguin colonies on Coleman Island in Antarctica. The ice barrier, over 20 meters high, blocked the birds' usual path to feeding waters. As a result, the foraging route length increased from 9.3 km (2024) to 14.9 km. The extra 5.6 km each way exhausted adult penguins and delayed their return. The 2025 breeding season became one of the worst on record: aerial surveys counted only 6,658 live chicks—a 69% drop from the previous season. The research team led by Jeong-Hoon Kim notes that such random events highlight the vulnerability of Antarctic birds to changes in ice microrelief. Scientists call for revising population forecasting methods to include iceberg drift trajectories and the likelihood of them grounding near colonies.
