Horror on a ferry in Indonesia: hundreds of people trapped (VIDEO)

A fire broke out on the KMP Mutiara Sentosa 2 ferry in the Java Sea with 271 people on board. Five died, 41 are missing, and 225 were evacuated. The search is hampered by rough seas, and the Indonesian Navy has been deployed. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

In the Java Sea off the island of Java, the passenger ferry KMP Mutiara Sentosa 2, en route from Surabaya to Makassar, caught fire. On board were 271 people: 232 passengers and 39 crew members. The fire started around 06:00–07:00 local time near Madura Island. Contact with the captain was lost, and the vessel's location was established by 09:45 thanks to a cargo ship. Passengers in life jackets jumped into the sea. By 10:00, evacuation began with the help of civilian vessels and tugboats. 225 people were pulled from the water, the bodies of 5 dead were recovered, and the fate of 41 people remains unknown. The search is complicated by strong waves, and the Indonesian Navy has joined the operation. The cause of the fire is being determined. The incident has again raised questions about the safety of maritime transport in Indonesia, where regular disasters are linked to weak oversight and violations of operating rules.
