Sherif Ahmedzai, 26, was arrested by Athens police on suspicion of murdering Elizabeth-Jane Ross, a 38-year-old charity volunteer, and using her credit card to withdraw thousands of euros. According to the investigation file and preliminary medical reports, Ross died of strangulation. Ahmedzai confessed to dumping her body in an abandoned building and sending text messages from her mobile phone to convince her relatives she was still alive. Greek authorities revealed that a homeless person discovered her remains on July 18 after noticing a foul smell from an empty building in the Kypseli district. Security footage shows a person matching his description pushing a suitcase. The investigation turned when his American wife, Aliena Hall, contacted police expressing concern about his behavior. She discovered he was missing from their home on July 15 and checked his location. Ahmedzai tried to give her 2,550 euros in cash and a new iPhone 17 Pro, which she handed to police. A raid on his home found a black metal gun (a non-functional replica) and a military knife. In his interrogation, he claimed he found Ross lifeless, but admitted to using her cards and phone. Ahmedzai, who fled Afghanistan at age 15, converted to Christianity and married Hall in April 2023. He is expected to appear before a judge this coming Wednesday.
