Ceuta's leader, Juan Jesús Vivas, demanded that Madrid declare a state of emergency and send additional security forces. Spain is already deploying army and police units and a warship to the city. The Interior Ministry said that those who illegally crossed the border will be deported, and Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said authorities are focused on restoring order as quickly as possible. Meanwhile, Italy unilaterally suspended the free movement regime with Spain within the Schengen area, citing the migration crisis in Ceuta. Ceuta and Melilla remain the only EU territories with a land border with Africa. In 2021, the enclave already experienced a major crisis when about 10,000 people entered within a few days.
