A new analysis of data from the Chief Economist's Department at the Ministry of Finance reveals a surge in home purchase deal cancellations in Israel. According to monitoring conducted in January 2026, 37,000 deals were cancelled in the first half of 2026, and cancellations in August have jumped 41% from last year, reaching 1,821. The analysis, by senior deputy to the chief economist Galit Ben Naim, focuses on why buyers cancel and what they pay. The southern region led with 475 cancellations of deals signed 2023-2025, with financial difficulties cited in about two-thirds of cases. In a third of southern cancellations, buyers had paid nothing. Contracts typically include 10% compensation for cancellation, but many agreements include 'Ex Gratia' waivers. Average compensation in the south was about NIS 20,000, with some cases reaching NIS 200,000 or more, and up to NIS 500,000 in Tel Aviv. Ben Naim noted that cancellations are not limited to the periphery, citing a luxury Tel Aviv home deal cancelled due to financial difficulties.
