"He destroyed an entire family": Only six years in prison for the driver who caused the deaths of Tzipora and Noam Rimel

The prosecution had sought 15 years. Efrayim Rimel, who was injured in the accident, harshly criticized the sentence.
The Jerusalem District Court today (Monday) sentenced Tariq Kard to six years in prison for two counts of reckless manslaughter after he caused a fatal car accident on Route 443. The accident killed Tzipora Rimel and her infant daughter Noam Rachel Rimel, and other family members were seriously injured. The court determined that Kard drove at about 140-145 km/h and struck the family's vehicle, rejecting defense claims of a technical failure. In addition to the prison term, the court imposed a 15-year license suspension, a suspended sentence, and compensation to the family. The prosecution had sought 15 years, arguing that Kard bears sole responsibility for the accident, drove at excessive speed during a "test drive" in a car he was not accustomed to, and did not accept responsibility. Efrayim Rimel, who was injured and left paralyzed, attacked the sentence, saying: "It turns out that human life is worth barely 3 years." Kard's defense attorney had asked for only nine months of community service.
