Hate Incitement in Toronto: 8 Accused Raised Antisemitic Signs in the Heart of a Jewish Neighborhood

Toronto police arrested two more suspects over the weekend in connection with a protest where antisemitic signs were displayed in front of Israel supporters in the heart of the city's Jewish area. The detainees, Daniela Buonamico, 40, and Shahram Nayeb-Yazdi, 63, both Toronto residents, join six other detainees, bringing the total number of accused in the case to eight. The two are charged with willful promotion of hatred and public incitement to hatred. They were arrested on Friday, August 7, by the hate crimes unit and brought to court the next day for bail hearings. The protest took place about five months ago, on March 15, at the intersection of Bathurst and Sheppard streets in northern Toronto, an area with a large Jewish population. According to police, the accused took antisemitic signs from a warehouse on the morning of the protest, displayed them to the public and toward pro-Israel protesters, and marched toward them while shouting slurs. The signs included cartoons and imagery intended to "demonize and dehumanize Jews," according to the Simon Wiesenthal Friends Center. Jewish organizations described some of the imagery as depicting Jews as "vermin," and there were calls for the destruction of the State of Israel. Arrests began in April with the arrest of Muhammad Anas Sial, followed by five more suspects. The investigation is ongoing, and police emphasized that filing charges for willful promotion of hatred requires the consent of the Attorney General. The incident follows other antisemitic events in Canada, including shootings at two synagogues in Toronto.
