Haredim to protest on Highway 4; police respond: 'blatant lie'

The Haredi community is preparing to protest today (Wednesday) in the afternoon on Highway 4 near the Bnei Brak junction, against the handover of a deserter to the military police at the end of his police investigation. They claim this violates the promise of Commissioner R.N. Danny Levy not to transfer deserters who come to the police station on their own initiative. The police strongly reject the claims, calling them a 'blatant lie'. The suspect, Moshe Steiner from Jerusalem, was summoned on Monday to the National Fraud Investigation Unit (YAHBAL) in Lahav 433 for a warning investigation as a suspect in fraud offenses. The police attribute to him a central role in brokering between Haredim and a middleman and other parties, who forged details and took driving tests (test) in their name to obtain driving licenses. The affair involves dangerous fraud, in which Haredi individuals took tests in the name of others and obtained licenses for applicants who never learned to drive. The police note that the commissioner committed not to transfer deserters who come to the station on their own initiative to file a complaint, but this is a different case: a suspect in serious fraud offenses. They add that the threat to protest is 'granting that public permission to commit serious offenses while endangering lives'. The protest is planned for 16:00 on Highway 4 near the Coca-Cola junction.
