MK Meir Porush, a senior figure in Agudat Yisrael, threatens a consumer boycott against major companies in the economy if sanctions on Haredi draft evaders continue. In the main speech at the "Tevuna for Economics" conference, Porush claimed that the judicial system wants to "starve the Haredi children of Israel" and warned: "The Haredi public consumes over 51 billion shekels a year. These numbers prove that we are a tremendous economic force. If anyone thinks they can continue to persecute us economically - they should know that we will not hesitate to use this immense consumer power." Porush referred to data from the "Tevuna Index" and a survey by the "Midgam" institute, according to which 41% of Haredi households were forced to cut back on basic food purchases, and among yeshiva students the number jumps to 51%. He said, "The judicial system decided to starve the Haredi children of Israel." He called on the great Torah sages to give an instruction to use economic power to "live here as Haredi Jews without compromises."
