The ship has been on an operational deployment since November, more than a month beyond the planned seven-month period. Senator Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut wrote to Hegseth and Acting Secretary of the Navy Hong Cao, expressing 'serious concerns' about the mission extension and its impact on crew members. Blumenthal stressed that even under normal conditions, service on an aircraft carrier involves long shifts in a dangerous environment, and that attrition and fatigue could increase the risk of fatal errors. The storm grew after the 'Military Times' website reported that at least two sailors attempted to jump from the ship. The wife of one of them claimed her husband had reached a state of severe burnout. Hegseth dismissed the claims, telling reporters in Panama that the situation was 'completely misrepresented', adding that he has 'tremendous respect and gratitude' for the sailors. Already in April, claims were published about a decline in the quantity and quality of food on the ship, which Hegseth called 'fake news'. Senator Mark Kelly wrote that the reports are 'disturbing', and Senator Ruben Gallego announced he is promoting a bipartisan oversight visit to the aircraft carrier. Blumenthal argued that the deployment extension is particularly concerning because the Trump administration has not adequately explained the objectives of military operations in Iran.
