The annual conference for the upcoming school year of the Association of Education Department Heads in local authorities opened today (Thursday) at Sammy Ofer Stadium in Haifa, focusing on the phenomenon of violence in the education system. The conference took place without Education Minister Yoav Kisch, who was on a family vacation, to the disappointment of participants. Association Chairperson Shely Keren attributed the violence to a turbulent national period, erosion of mental resilience, and polarized public discourse. Haifa Mayor Yona Yahav called for identifying boredom in classrooms and making dramatic changes to curricula, warning that he sees erosion already at the level of IDF officers, which should be very concerning. Education Ministry Director General Meir Shimoni emphasized that the fight against violence is a fight for society's character and the education system. Local Government Center Chairman Haim Bibas criticized the special education law as a huge burden due to populism in the Knesset, threatening that the system would collapse if not managed anew. Teachers' Union Secretary General Yaffa Ben David replied that she was the only one who opposed the law, calling for reducing class sizes, adding assistants, and changing the law. She warned that if the threat of violence is not addressed, it will explode in everyone's face. Deputy Superintendent Yuval Ravivo from the Israel Police noted a shortage of tens of percent in police officers and that authorities have not dealt enough with youth.
