From Mysterious Murder in The Hague to Death in a Peruvian Prison: The Stormy Life of Criminal Daniel Amona

Israeli criminal Daniel Amona, 62, from Petah Tikva, died today (Sunday) in a prison in Peru after being incarcerated for about three and a half years. Amona was arrested in January 2023 in Lima after cocaine was found in his suitcase. In his past, he was convicted of the murder of Miriam Sharon in The Hague in 1990, but was acquitted on appeal in 2021.

Israeli criminal Daniel Amona, 62, from Petah Tikva, died today (Sunday) in a prison in Peru, after being incarcerated in the country for about three and a half years. Amona was arrested on January 9, 2023, at Jorge Chávez International Airport in Lima, after cocaine hidden inside a wooden frame was found in his suitcase. The arrest was carried out by agents of the anti-drug administration of Peru's national police (DIRANDRO). A few months after his arrest, his son, Lior, then 24, was also arrested in Israel on suspicion of involvement in the affair of importing a carpet from Peru in which about 1.4 kg of cocaine was hidden. Amona's death closes another chapter in a criminal path that spanned decades and crossed several countries. His name was linked to one of the most mysterious murder cases in the Netherlands: the death of Israeli Miriam Sharon in The Hague in 1990. Amona was convicted of murder and sentenced to 14 years in prison, but in 2021 he was acquitted on appeal after the court ruled that it was not proven beyond a reasonable doubt that her killing was premeditated. The case remains unresolved as to the identity of the perpetrator.
