A 31-year-old Mexican fisherman, Erasto Crisanto Valdes, survived for more than two weeks after being trapped in an underwater cave (cenote) at a depth of over 100 meters. The incident occurred on July 23 when he went fishing with his father and, engrossed in spearfishing, lost his bearings. He found an air pocket where he remained in complete darkness without food, quenching his thirst with water from an underground river. Due to the lack of light, he lost track of time and believed he had spent no more than three days underground. The international search operation, involving experts from Mexico, Germany, the United States, and the Dominican Republic, lasted more than two weeks. Six days before his discovery, rescuers found his spear gun at a depth of about 65 meters. An American cave diver found him after hearing a response to his shout. The exhausted man was brought to the surface, and doctors confirmed that his life was not in danger. He expressed gratitude for the rescue.
