First successful dual liver and kidney transplant using robot

Specialists from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis and the Organ Transplant Center at Barnes Hospital performed the first dual liver and kidney transplant using a robot, through a single incision just 7.5 centimeters long, for a 59-year-old patient from Missouri, whose body accepted both organs and recovered.

The two procedures required a single incision of only about 7.5 centimeters, compared to 40-50 centimeters in traditional open surgery. The patient, Darryl Bosworth (59) from Missouri, suffered kidney failure due to liver cirrhosis, his weight dropped to about 32 kilograms, and he became bedridden and on dialysis. After three weeks, suitable donor organs were found. The surgery was performed by Professor Adeel Khan, who previously performed the first robotic kidney transplants in the US in 2020 and the first robotic liver transplant in 2023, assisted by Associate Professor Jessica Lindemann. The surgeons transplanted the donor liver first in an operation lasting about 8 hours using a robotic console with a 3D screen. The next morning, they transplanted the kidney using the same incision in an additional 6 hours. According to the press release, the patient's body accepted both organs, he regained mental clarity on day ten, and after two weeks he was able to walk and climb stairs.
