False Earthquake Alert Sent to Israelis by Mistake

The cause was Android algorithms that mistook device vibrations for seismic activity. A real earthquake of magnitude 5.2 occurred near the Suez Canal but posed no threat to Israel. On the morning of August 3, 2026, Israelis widely received alarming earthquake notifications on their smartphones. The Home Front Command denied any involvement in the dispatch. The false alarm was caused by built-in algorithms of the Android operating system, which mistakenly interpreted the simultaneous vibration of many devices as seismic activity. Around 3 a.m., an earthquake of magnitude 5.2 did occur near the Suez Canal, and tremors were even felt in Lebanon, but their intensity was insufficient to threaten Israel. According to the Geological Survey of Israel, Android detected the vibration and sent out an earthquake warning with a magnitude of 5.9. The national early warning system 'Trua' recorded the tremors but, due to the epicenter's distance and weak magnitude, was not supposed to activate an alarm. This is not the first such incident: a similar event occurred on June 13, 2025, when the mass movement of citizens to shelters due to Israeli strikes on Iran was mistakenly interpreted by Google's system as an earthquake of magnitude 5.1. Fortunately, the current incident resulted in no damage or casualties.
