Drawing on data from Live Science, researchers suggest that after the destruction of spacecraft or giant structures such as Dyson spheres, individual artificial particles could have been ejected from star systems by stellar wind streams. Over millions and billions of years, they could travel across the galaxy, reach the solar system, and settle on the Moon. Due to the lack of atmosphere, tectonic activity, and liquid water, the lunar surface is an ideal repository for such particles. Modeling has shown that artificial particles up to 3 micrometers in size can survive in interstellar space for up to a billion years. According to scientists' estimates, just one cubic meter of lunar regolith may be enough to detect at least one fragment of extraterrestrial technology. The absence of such finds in samples brought back from the Moon, researchers argue, does not prove their absence—they may simply not have been looked for.
