A man in his 40s is hospitalized in serious condition after attempting suicide in a courthouse holding cell while awaiting a hearing on extending his detention. This was first reported this morning (Tuesday) by Kan News. The man was arrested in a wrongful arrest after being suspected of causing damage to the door of his mother's home in Ashkelon, following a report by a neighbor who alerted the police. At a hearing held in his absence, after he was evacuated to the hospital, Judge Dorit Bonda sharply criticized the conduct of the investigating unit and ruled that there was no grounds for arrest in the case. The judge noted that she found it puzzling that the investigating unit did not release the suspect at the station under restrictive conditions, as the offense does not establish grounds for arrest. The Israel Police responded that the suspect was arrested after his family members contacted the police and reported that they feared for his well-being, including concerns that he might harm himself, and also expressed fear for their own safety due to his behavior. It was further stated that according to the report, the suspect threatened to harm himself while holding a knife, and therefore the officers carried out his arrest. The police clarified that the incident in which the suspect attempted to harm himself occurred while he was in the custody of the Israel Prison Service.
