Drone Attack Threat in Israel: Security System Warns Government

At a closed meeting of the Knesset's Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee, representatives of the National Security Council (NSC) told lawmakers that the security cabinet had received a warning about the threat of drone attacks. This was reported by Ynet on Thursday, August 6. The specific target of a possible attack and the direction from which it might be carried out were not disclosed to lawmakers. However, representatives of the Israel Defense Forces and the NSC stressed that Israel's adversaries continue to actively build up their capabilities, and the likelihood of drone use remains one of the main concerns for senior security establishment leaders. As early as last month, a senior Israeli official said authorities were considering imposing strict restrictions and an effective ban on civilian drone use. This measure was discussed at security cabinet meetings amid the escalation of confrontation with Iran. The main reason is fears that neighboring states or terrorist groups in Judea and Samaria could use attack drones or fiber-optic-controlled drones. Israel hopes that a complete ban on civilian drone flights will make it easier to detect and neutralize potential threats. Meanwhile, security sources told Ynet that they currently have no data confirming the presence of attack drones, including fiber-optic-controlled ones, in Judea and Samaria. A senior Israeli official previously admitted that the issue causes serious concern: "There is a very serious threat here, and we have no ready solution to neutralize it. We must honestly admit: this is an extremely serious danger." According to Israeli authorities, one of the most dangerous scenarios is the use of attack or fiber-optic drones to target statesmen or important state institutions. Two months ago, Ynet reported that the IDF was recording Iranian attempts to destabilize the situation in Judea and Samaria, including by transferring there the tactics of using attack drones already actively employed against Israeli troops in Lebanon. At that time, security officials noted that they assumed there were no active attack drones in Judea and Samaria yet. Nevertheless, as a preventive measure, the IDF confiscates any drone found in the area.
