Drivers, pay attention: A new change takes effect - the offenses that will jump you to 10 points

A new reform in the driver points system has taken effect, including stricter penalties for three offenses that will increase points to 10, alongside leniency for other offenses. The changes aim to address 234 fatal accidents since the beginning of the year.

A new reform in the driver points system took effect on August 20, 2026, aiming to reduce the number of fatal accidents. Against the backdrop of 234 fatal accidents since the beginning of the year, the reform tightens points for three major offenses: using a mobile phone while driving, failing to give right of way to a pedestrian at a crosswalk, and driving off-road. These offenses will jump points to 10. Conversely, other offenses received leniency. Another change concerns the validity period of points: points for offenses of up to 6 points will be valid for only one year, instead of two. Points for 8 or 10 points will remain valid for two years. Additionally, in the case of multiple offenses in the same incident, only the points for the most severe offense will be charged to the driver. The reform was published in the official gazette on July 21, 2026, and the leniencies and tightenings took effect 30 days later.
