Disturbing footage from Arad sparked outrage after a Haredi man was seen wandering alone through the city streets and defacing images of women on billboards. Following the footage, a complaint was filed with the police for damage to public property. The municipality stated: "The Arad Municipality will take significant enforcement and punishment measures against the offender to create deterrence against criminals who try to harm the public space." Mayor Yair Maayan added: "A shocking video in broad daylight in Arad, a violent and extreme criminal trying to establish facts in the public space. The video was transferred to the Arad police for criminal enforcement. We will not allow anyone to harm the public space and try to exclude women from the public space." The incident occurs against a backdrop of prolonged tension between the Haredi and secular communities in Arad, which reached a boiling point about two months ago with clashes and brawls following Haredi protests against the conscription of yeshiva students and road blockades.
