Dangerous fever spreads across Israel - one dead

Israel has recorded its first death from West Nile fever this season: a man in his 70s has died. A total of ten cases of infection have been detected, with three patients hospitalized. Israel has registered the first fatal case of West Nile fever infection this season. A man in his 70s died from complications; the first symptoms appeared in mid-July. After his condition deteriorated, he was hospitalized, but they could not save him. His place of residence and underlying diseases have not been disclosed. Since the start of the season, ten cases of infection have been detected; those infected had high fever, rash, and altered consciousness. Three patients remain in the hospital in stable condition. Infected mosquitoes have been found in Tel Aviv-Yafo, Tayibe, Tire, Qalansawe, and the Lev HaSharon Regional Council. Laboratory tests confirmed the virus, and authorities have intensified treatment of areas and monitoring. Previously, infected mosquitoes were found in the south; now the virus has been detected for the first time in central areas. The fever is transmitted through mosquito bites and does not spread from person to person. Most infected people have no symptoms; in rare cases, encephalitis and meningitis are possible. There is no vaccine; treatment is symptomatic. Residents are advised to eliminate standing water and use repellents.
