Former British serviceman Paul Barrett was detained at Newcastle Airport after customs officers found over 20 kilograms of cannabis resin and more than a kilogram of ketamine in his suitcase. The incident occurred on May 4 when Barrett arrived on a Jet2 flight from Faro, Portugal. During the search, he admitted he was carrying 'a bit of weed' because of a debt. The wholesale value of the seized substances is estimated at around £80,000. At trial, Barrett stated he suffers from PTSD and addictions following his army service. He has 18 prior convictions, including a 2023 sentence for possession of cocaine with intent to supply. Judge Sarah Mallett imposed 18 months suspended with a two-year probation period and 100 hours of community service. Defense lawyer Chris Knox noted that Barrett has realized his mistake and wants to return to his children. Barrett himself thanked the judge for the chance.
