Colombia has officially recognized Israel's sovereignty over the Golan Heights, becoming the second country in the world, after the United States, to support Israel's position on this issue. The statement emphasized that the country has faced serious threats on its borders for decades, which became especially evident after the terrorist attack of October 7. Colombian authorities consider maintaining Israeli control over the Golan Heights an important element of national defense and Israel's ability to protect its citizens. Israel established control over most of the Golan Heights during the Six-Day War in 1967. In 1981, the Knesset extended Israeli law and jurisdiction to the Golan Heights, but most countries in the world still do not recognize Israeli sovereignty over this territory. The situation first changed in March 2019, when US President Donald Trump signed a proclamation recognizing the Golan Heights as part of Israel. Now Colombia has joined the US, and to date, two countries—the US and Colombia—officially recognize Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights.
