A single cockroach quickly left the hiding place when the lighting turned green, but a large group that had settled together chose to stay, ignoring the environmental change. The researchers ran computer simulations with 'virtual cockroaches' programmed with only two rules: prefer red light and stay where others gather – with no internal memory. The result replicated reality: simple social interactions were enough to create group memory. The discovery explains cockroaches' resistance to pest control: while a single cockroach will flee, the entire colony acts as an organic unit with blind social inertia, ignoring external threats. The researchers believe similar dynamics operate in many other species, including schools of fish, flocks of birds, and even human decision-making.
