Chilling: Climbers Ascended the Himalayas and Encountered Bodies Buried in Snow

The bodies were found at an altitude of 5,000 meters by local residents. A rescue team is trying to reach the site, but stormy weather is delaying the helicopter landing.

Nepal police announced that the remains of five mountain climbers, who disappeared in the deadly avalanche last November on Yalung Ri peak in the Himalayas, were located yesterday (Friday) after the seasonal snow melted. The bodies were found at an altitude of about 5,000 meters near the base camp, by local residents who were climbing in the area and alerted the police. Deputy Superintendent of Police Manoj Kumar Lama confirmed that the team is in the process of recovering the remains. The climbers were buried under the snow when an avalanche hit them last November, while they were attempting to reach the summit. Two days after the avalanche, the bodies of Italian climber Paolo Cocco and French climber Christian Andre Manfredi were recovered, but five others, three foreign nationals and two Nepalis, remained buried. The rescue mission was then suspended after efforts failed, but was resumed after residents identified the remains. A rescue team tried to reach the site by helicopter yesterday morning, but harsh weather conditions prevented landing. Lama noted that the helicopter will be launched today (Saturday) to recover the remaining remains.
