Participants will be randomly assigned to treatment and control groups, and researchers will monitor safety and efficacy. Phase 3 follows early trials that showed safety and cell survival. Researchers emphasize that it is still an experimental treatment but express hope it could change the course of the disease. More than 10 million patients worldwide await the results.
