The index is based on universities' impact on the AI industry, including the number of graduates and faculty working at leading companies, entrepreneurship (graduates who founded startups, number of unicorns, and fundraising volume), research volume and quality, computing infrastructure, depth of AI curriculum, and mentions in generative AI systems. Israel ranked 8th in the number of graduates founding AI companies. The Technion outperforms elite universities like Harvard in two sub-indices: number of faculty and graduates in AI industries, and entrepreneurship among graduates. When adjusted for university size, the Technion's entrepreneurship performance is similar to Stanford (ranked 1st) and even shows an advantage over universities like Duke, Northwestern, and Pennsylvania, which have larger budgets.
