Bituah Leumi Uncovers Violations — Refund Process Begins

The National Insurance Institute of Israel (Bituah Leumi) has uncovered violations in the use of funds allocated for the rehabilitation of those affected by hostilities. About 2,700 people, mostly from Sderot, have been asked to return approximately 15 million shekels spent on personal items, including airline tickets, electronics, and jewelry. The agency has initiated a refund process.

The National Insurance Institute of Israel (Bituah Leumi) has uncovered widespread violations in the compensation program for those affected by hostilities, launched after the events of October 7, 2023. About 2,700 people, mostly residents of Sderot, received notices demanding the return of approximately 15 million shekels to the treasury. The audit showed that funds intended for rehabilitation were spent on airline tickets, smartphones, jewelry, sportswear, and household appliances. Additionally, cases of fraud involving fake checks were identified. Recipients have 45 days to submit proof of legitimate use of the payments. The agency emphasizes that the money will be returned to the fund and directed to those who truly need support.
