A new study by the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) shows that up to 11.5% of cancer cases may be linked to excess body weight. Visceral fat, which accumulates in the abdominal cavity around internal organs, poses a particular danger. This type of fat tissue actively releases biologically active substances — adipokines — that can sustain chronic inflammation and disrupt metabolism, creating conditions for tumor development. The study used data from nearly 460,000 participants in the UK Biobank; observation lasted about 12 years, with approximately 50,000 new cancer cases recorded. Scientists excluded cases identified in the early years to avoid distortion where undiagnosed cancer itself causes weight loss. Among the cancers linked to obesity are colorectal, liver, breast, uterine, and ovarian cancers. It is noted that the link may be more pronounced in women due to the influence of fat tissue on estrogen metabolism. The authors emphasize that weight control is just one element of prevention alongside diet and physical activity.
