Back from injury and opening the Olympic campaign: Shahar Sagiv finishes fifth at the World Cup in Paraguay
Israeli triathlete Shahar Sagiv (31) from Maccabi Tel Aviv finished fifth at the World Cup competition in Asunción, Paraguay, and opened his Olympic campaign ahead of Los Angeles 2028. It was his first competition since November 2025, after an injury to his right foot prevented him from running since April. Sagiv finished the swim in the first pack, and in the cycling leg joined a breakaway group. He said he could not have wished for a better return.
Israel's leading Olympic triathlete, Shahar Sagiv (31) from Maccabi Tel Aviv, finished fifth today (Sunday) at the World Cup competition in Asunción, Paraguay. It was his first competition since November 2025, after an injury to his right foot prevented him from running since April. The fifth place gave him his first ranking points on the road to Los Angeles 2028, where he aims for a third Olympic appearance. The competition was held over Olympic distances: 1,500 meters swimming, 40 kilometers cycling, and 10 kilometers running, with 60 triathletes participating, in pleasant weather of 17 degrees Celsius and a cold wind. Sagiv finished the swim in the first pack, and in the cycling leg joined a breakaway group that led the second pack by 2:30 minutes. At the end, he said: "I could not have wished for a better return than today's, at the start of my third Olympic campaign. I am very satisfied, as in today's competition I achieved significant points for the Olympic ranking." He is expected to return to Israel and complete things he could not do during his recovery.
