Toronto police have detained a 19-year-old man and a 15-year-old teenager in connection with a shooting at the US consulate that occurred on July 27. Police Chief Myron Demkiw stated that the suspects acted as mercenaries, recruited and directed through encrypted messaging apps. Each faces 11 charges, including attacking persons under international protection. This is the second attack on the diplomatic mission since the beginning of the year: the first occurred on March 10, after which security measures around American and Israeli diplomatic missions in Canada were strengthened. In June, two young men aged 18 and 19 were detained in connection with the March attack. No one was injured in either attack, but police regard them as a direct threat to national security.
