Assuta, Microsoft develop AI medical assistant to reduce relieve doctors' documentation tasks

Assuta Medical Centers and Microsoft are developing an AI system to serve as a personal assistant for doctors, handling documentation and information retrieval. The AI will summarize medical records before visits, transcribe conversations during meetings, and draft visit summaries, subject to doctor review. The goal is to reduce administrative burden, save hundreds of work hours monthly, and shorten visits without reducing patient conversation time. The first pilot is expected within a year.

Assuta Medical Centers and Microsoft are jointly developing an artificial intelligence system designed to serve as a personal assistant for doctors, handling documentation and information retrieval tasks. The AI will collect relevant medical information, summarize test results and previous documents, document patient meetings, and automatically draft visit summaries. It is intended to read the medical record and present key information before a patient meeting, and listen to and transcribe the conversation during the meeting, subject to approvals and privacy rules. The doctor will review, correct, and approve the document before it is added to the medical record. Assuta stressed that the system will serve only as a decision support tool and will not replace medical judgment. The system is also intended to assist after the visit by identifying when a patient requires a test or additional appointment and helping schedule follow-ups. The project aims to save hundreds of doctor work hours each month, potentially shortening visits without reducing time spent with patients. The first pilot is expected to begin within a year. Additionally, Assuta and Microsoft agreed to gradually transition to Microsoft's cloud infrastructure and establish a platform for developing additional AI agents, with strict rules on privacy and information security.
