Counter Terrorism Policing North West (CTPNW) identified Bashir through phone data from al-Shamie, revealing a close association and shared extremist views. The pair discussed preparing for "war" and made frequent antisemitic remarks in WhatsApp conversations. Bashir expressed support for jihadist violence in Syria and rejoiced at videos of beheadings. They were part of a WhatsApp group called "Aspiring to the Ranks of the Elite," where Bashir sent over 2,000 messages in six months, including calls for persecution and murder. On August 14, 2025, they made a 10-hour round trip to the UK Defence Academy, with al-Shamie taking notes on security arrangements titled "espionage." The judge, Justice Cheema-Grubb, cited a biblical proverb in sentencing, stating the sentence should serve as a warning. Assistant Chief Constable Rob Potts called Bashir a dangerous individual and hoped the sentence would deter extremist activity.
