The authors of the study note that such a situation contributes to the development of local floods, accelerates soil degradation, intensifies erosion processes, and negatively affects the quality of water resources. No less serious consequences are possible in the opposite scenario, when prolonged rains are sharply replaced by hot weather. After heavy rains, there may be a feeling that water reserves are sufficient, but at high temperatures, moisture quickly evaporates. This can lead to an unexpected water shortage even soon after a period of heavy precipitation. To assess the possible consequences of climate change, scientists performed large-scale computer modeling. They analyzed about 700 river basins, simulating scenarios of an increase in average global temperature by 2 and 4 degrees compared to pre-industrial levels. The results indicate that the frequency of sharp transitions between dry and wet periods will increase. According to researchers' estimates, in some regions such climate 'swings' could occur more than twice as often as observed at the end of the last century. Experts emphasize that existing infrastructure in many countries was designed to deal with either prolonged droughts or major floods. However, climate change creates a new problem: the need to cope with several extreme events that rapidly succeed each other. According to the study's authors, traditional protection measures may no longer be sufficient. They believe that countries need to prepare in advance for successive climate extremes, improve water storage and retention systems, and develop regional adaptation programs to help mitigate the effects of such changes.
