The previous record, 165, was set just last month. The boat was documented so crowded that migrants sat on the edge with their legs in the water. The Home Office in London said the incident reflects reckless tactics by criminal gangs. Despite the record, the Labour government boasts of a 43% drop in the total number since the start of the year - 14,819 as of August 8. Last month saw the lowest number of crossings since July 2020. Former Prime Minister Keir Starmer stepped down last month amid polls showing a drop in popularity, partly due to frustration over immigration. His successor, Andy Burnham, promises an 'uncompromising fight' and visited Dover. Reform UK leader Nigel Farage called it an illegal invasion and suggested sending the navy to turn back boats. His party unveiled a plan to deport foreigners from prisons, including to El Salvador, if countries of origin refuse to take them back.
