Greek police have arrested a 26-year-old Afghan citizen on suspicion of the brutal murder of 38-year-old Scotswoman Elizabeth-Jane Ross. The woman helped refugees in Greece and was allegedly killed by one of them. Ross's body was discovered by a homeless person on July 18 in an abandoned building in the Athens district of Kypseli, in a suitcase wrapped in cloth. The suspect tried to cover his tracks: he sent messages from the victim's phone to relatives, including her father, saying 'I need to be alone.' He was arrested almost two weeks after the body was found, after he appeared on surveillance cameras withdrawing money from Ross's cards at ATMs. During a search of his apartment, a replica gun and a knife were seized. Ross, a resident of Edinburgh, was associated with a Greek organization helping refugees from Afghanistan and Iran. On her last visit, she arrived on June 26, stayed with acquaintances in Keratsini, then left. She said she would be in Kypseli on July 15. The body was found three days after that date. The motive for the murder is still unclear. The investigation awaits toxicology results. Flowers appeared near the site where the body was found, with a card reading: 'Here lies an angel.' A friend of Ross called her an 'angel.' According to The Telegraph, she was a deeply religious Christian who helped Syrian refugees in Kurdistan.
