At Jakarta's airport, a Malaysia Airlines pilot was detained after more than 70,000 ecstasy pills and methamphetamine were found in his luggage. The pilot admitted to transporting drugs for payment and reported previous instances. He faces severe punishment under Indonesian law.

At Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Jakarta, a 39-year-old Malaysia Airlines pilot, a Malaysian citizen with initials MS, was detained. During customs inspection, more than 70,000 ecstasy pills weighing about 25 kilograms and approximately 4 grams of methamphetamine were found in his luggage. The incident occurred on July 29, when the pilot arrived on flight MH272 from Kuala Lumpur. Camera footage shows customs officers extracting a large package of drugs. Also seized was a urine vial, presumably to substitute for a drug test. During interrogation, MS stated he was offered 50,000 Malaysian ringgit (over $12,200) to transport the substances and admitted to previously transporting methamphetamine to Sabah and Jakarta. Urine analysis showed the presence of MDMA, ecstasy, methamphetamine, and cocaine, suggesting drug use during the flight. There were at least 170 passengers on board. Indonesia imposes harsh penalties for drugs, including the death penalty. Malaysia Airlines stated it is cooperating with the investigation and has initiated an internal review.
